“Healthy” Relationships

Being in a healthy, stable, loving relationship may improve your quality of life and overall health. Some recent research published in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology suggests that it may even help survivors of breast cancer significantly. The study involved more than 130 women around the age of 55. Using blood samples and questionnaires, the participants that reported being in romantic, satisfying relationships showed lower levels of risk for a multitude of health problems, including lower blood inflammatory markers. Furthermore, these women also reported lower levels of psychological stress.

Regulating inflammation can impact health, as seen in breast cancer survivors. Inflammation initially aids healing when we are feeling sick or have experienced an injury. Yet heightened inflammation over time raises the risk of delayed healing or can contribute to many other diseases. Chronic inflammation has been tied to type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and heart disease.

While the study concentrated on older women who had survived breast cancer, it’s suggestion that focusing on strong, healthy relationships may assist in dealing with other illnesses by reducing stress levels.
