Visiting Loved Ones During the Pandemic

One of the more difficult parts of social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic is staying away from older loved ones like grandparents. People aged 65 and above becoming infected with coronavirus have a high mortality rate. With summer in full swing and many places reopening, you may be thinking about visiting your older loved ones. There are a few things to consider.

For one, think about the person you’re visiting. If they are diabetic, have a serious health condition, or if they have a weak immune system you may wish to figure out whether the visit is worth the risk. Should you decide to visit them, make sure you’re doing everything you can to minimize your chances of becoming infected before the trip – practicing careful social distancing, not going out unless you need to, and wearing a mask when recommended or mandated.

When you do travel, a road trip may be somewhat safer than a plane as you won’t be around multiple rows of strangers. However, road trips do require stops. Consider packing your food so that you don’t have to eat in public places. When you do need to stop, wear a mask, sanitize your hands, and wash them thoroughly after gassing up or using the bathroom at a gas station.

How Does Food Affect Your Mood?

Apart from life circumstances, the food you consume each day affects your mood, which may explain why you’re feeling angry or elated. Let’s explore a few ways food can help improve your demeanor.

You may be familiar with the slang term “hangry”, used to describe being simultaneously hungry and angry. Experiencing extended periods of hunger after a large, high carbohydrate meal may cause your blood sugar levels to drop, increasing the odds of feeling irritable. This is why it’s so important to eat small portions of healthy foods as part of a balanced diet throughout the day.

Omega-3 fatty acids play essential roles in keeping the nervous system running smoothly. You’ll find them in foods like walnuts, certain types of fish, flaxseed, and more. They are part of a healthy diet. They may also help with treating the effects of depression.

Serotonin has been described as the “happy hormone” that is released into the brain resulting in positive feelings. As with omega-3 fatty acids, consuming certain foods rich in this compound may help with increased levels of serotonin. Bananas, almonds, and yogurt are a few examples.

The setting in which you enjoy a meal can also contribute to your mood. For example, a meal enjoyed with your loved ones has been correlated with increasing levels of the hormone known as oxytocin, which can decrease anxiety, apprehension, and contribute to a feeling of caring and affection.

A Pain in the Back

Among the many issues people deal with, back pain is a common one. As many of us have to sit for hours at a desk often using poor posture, taking care of your back now can mean less pain as you get older.

If you have a regular full-time job sitting at a desk, make sure to get up now and then. Using a standing desk, or just regularly adjusting your work/body position, can help with easing back pain. Stretching is also a good way to ease tension in  the back muscles.

Regular exercise can help. You don’t necessarily have to start lifting weights to build back muscles. Simple running, biking or walking will improve postural tone. Yoga is another fantastic option where many of the exercises focus on strengthening the back muscles as well as the spine. With the right nutrition, exercising regularly will inevitably lead to weight loss, which can also help with easing stress on the back as well.

How about your body position at night? Your sleep posture may cause back pain. For example, sleeping on your side with the proper mattress or pillow support, or flat on your back can help keep the body aligned alleviating daytime back discomfort.

“Healthy” Relationships

Being in a healthy, stable, loving relationship may improve your quality of life and overall health. Some recent research published in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology suggests that it may even help survivors of breast cancer significantly. The study involved more than 130 women around the age of 55. Using blood samples and questionnaires, the participants that reported being in romantic, satisfying relationships showed lower levels of risk for a multitude of health problems, including lower blood inflammatory markers. Furthermore, these women also reported lower levels of psychological stress.

Regulating inflammation can impact health, as seen in breast cancer survivors. Inflammation initially aids healing when we are feeling sick or have experienced an injury. Yet heightened inflammation over time raises the risk of delayed healing or can contribute to many other diseases. Chronic inflammation has been tied to type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and heart disease.

While the study concentrated on older women who had survived breast cancer, it’s suggestion that focusing on strong, healthy relationships may assist in dealing with other illnesses by reducing stress levels.

Staying Hydrated

The body is made up of approximately 60% water. Large amounts of water can be lost each day through normal bodily processes and sweating in response to exercise or summer time heat. Adults that don’t drink enough water are more likely to consume food or beverages packed with sugar. Focusing on hydration can result in a host of benefits. Dehydration can produce many symptoms including a  “foggy” feeling in the head or overall  sluggishness. The best way to stay hydrated is to have a bottle of water handy at all times.

A healthy diet with sufficient vegetables and fruits can help with bodily hydration. While the majority of produce you see in the market has significant levels of water, consuming them in large quantities may add significant calories to your daily diet due to their natural sugars. Diabetics looking for hydration especially need to be aware of their total calorie intake (including sugars from drinks, juices or fruits).

While using water exclusively for hydration can be bland, squeezing some lemon into the water will give it a slight taste and the lemon water can also provide some vitamin C while potentially assisting with digestion -and minimizing unnecessary calorie consumption.
