Healthy Tips for Diabetics

For those dealing with diabetes, it is especially important to keep a close eye on what you consume and also stay active. In regards to the diet, watching caloric and carbohydrate intake, eating plenty of greens and veggies, and consuming foods that are rich in fiber such as whole grains. Fruits, in moderation, can be healthy but it’s also important to remain hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

Exercise is especially important for diabetics. Regular, low-intensity workouts are a place to start if you are unable to get out for your regular routine. Exercises that involve a full range of motion such as twisting the hips and waists, moving the legs, and turning the head in multiple directions are all good ways to start. A brisk walk as short as fifteen minutes can also help. Regardless of the type of exercise chosen, at least thirty minutes of physical activity each day may help with keeping blood sugar levels in check.

Considering the current circumstances with the COVID-19 pandemic, you may be feeling stressed for a multitude of reasons. Stress can impact blood glucose levels negatively among people dealing with type 2 diabetes, potentially causing them to spike. Whether it’s exercise or practicing meditation, make sure to keep stress levels in check.

Keeping the Heart Healthy

As one of the body’s most important organs, keeping the heart healthy is essential. A regular exercise routine is a fundamental step in ensuring the heart is in good shape. Diet also plays a big part in a healthy heart. Many foods can directly increase the risk of heart disease or lead to factors that may place you at a higher risk. Let’s explore a few ways to maintain a healthy diet

Cut down on processed foods. Processed foods are packed with preservatives. Consider keeping healthy snacks at home and choose meals cooked at home to reduce your processed food consumption whenever possible.

Introduce more fiber. Fiber can help you combat different heart-disease related risk factors. It may also assist with regulating hypertension, a primary cause of heart disease. Foods that are rich in fiber can also help to lower bad cholesterol levels (LDL).

Have some nuts. Nuts contain some vital nutrients you might not get from plant sources. A handful of nuts is a potent nutrient powerhouse. Nuts like almonds or walnuts are good for your heart health. They can also provide you with essential nutrients and assist with weight loss. When you’re craving a snack, they can help you feel full so you stay on track.

Moderate your sodium. A high sodium diet can be bad for the heart, increasing blood pressure while potentially affecting the health of the kidneys.

New Testing at Miami Beach

Many public testing sites for COVID-19 have requirements, such as being open only to patients that are already showing symptoms or requiring that people make an appointment before they’re allowed to be tested. Those simply looking for peace of mind from the result may not be eligible.

Much of that is now changing thanks to the recent opening of a new testing site in Miami Beach. Located at the Miami Beach Convention Center, the testing accepts drive-thrus but also allows for walk-ins without an appointment. To be tested, patients must be eighteen or older.  Children accompanied by a parent or guardian are also being allowed. Patients are not required to show symptoms to be tested and, again, there is no appointment required.

Miami Beach’s COVID-19 testing site is operating each day from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m at the 17th Street entrance to the Convention Center. When heading out for testing, be sure to wear a mask and have a photo ID ready before you go.

Boosting Respiratory Health

With any respiratory illness, the health of a person’s respiratory system will factor heavily into how a person fares while fighting the disease. Inflamed lungs make it harder for a person to breathe and may worsen pre-existing damage.

Hopefully, you will not become infected with COVID-19 but a healthy lifestyle is always a good idea. If you do become infected, the body is then better able to fight the virus. For starters, this means refraining from engaging in activities that impair lung function such as smoking or vaping. Both of these can suppress the immune system as well.

Exercising can boost respiratory capacity. Improving   lung function means that you may have less risk when fighting pulmonary infections.

Diet is another factor. A balanced diet rich in dark green leafy vegetables and fruits may support the body’s immune response.
